Well this was a Wednesday night out to see a play at the Backstage Theater in Longford. It is a nice place with a little seating area where you can have a glass of wine or cup of tea before the play and druing the intermission. The auditorium is nice and the seats have great cushions, but they are a bit snug with the leg room. I even found them a bit close, so Steve was none too happy with the stress on his knees! Still, if we take a side seat or the front row he can stretch out...
Anyway, the play we went to see was from the story The Butcher Boy. the story was written by Irish author Patrick McCabe in 1992. It is a really well-written novel. I took awhile to read it as it takes some doing to get into the mind set of the essentially crazy boy at the heart of the tale. It is humorous and tragic and really a disturbing story but a very good read.
The play was done with only two actors playing all the parts. They were SO GOOD!! You could easily tell when a new character was speaking and honestly, it was very entertaining. The one actor mostly played Francie Brady with his crazy mind, and the other actor played Francie with stable thoughts, and all the other characters - including all the women in the shop! I really can't say enough about the two actors - they were amazing. The use of props was the best. The bicycle was just a black hanger held out like handlebars, but I swear I felt like I could SEE the bike! I could go on and on....
So, it was a nice evening out and fun to do something different for a change, and I am glad we have finally gotten to see something at the local theater.
